Appleshaw is a village very close to the Wiltshire border. In earlier times it was an important centre for sheep trading - reports from around 1800 tell of 15,000 or more sheep sold at an annual fair here, rivalling the more famous sheep fairs at Weyhill.
 
Appleshaw is also noted for its walnut trees. Numerous sarsen stones, used as boundary markers, indicate settlement around Appleshaw and Clanville since the stone age. Roman pewter and pottery found nearby are now in the British Museum. Be careful if you are tempted to pick up a cricket bat in Appleshaw - the mighty WG Grace once scored a duck hereabouts!
