Dummer

Once known as 'Dunmere' (the hill - dun - and the lake - mere), but the lake's location is now a mystery! Our church (All Saints) contains some of the finest historical treasures of Hampshire: the rood canopy above the chancel arch is a very rare survival, certainly unique in Hampshire, and the pulpit (1380) is one of the six oldest in England. Dummer was also one of the earliest villages in England to enjoy public education - a bequest in 1610 provided a house and garden to be used for the instruction of boys.
At Dummer you can go up and down - the main streets are Up Street and Down Street! There's a strong sense of community, witness the crowds at a car-boot sale in aid of the church.
